this is a beautiful pattern of shadows you have made ... i really like the idea of creating a simple form that generates such a beautiful and dynamic pattern ... :)

Dawn,

It's fun to see these experiments. I like the wiry sticks in contrast to the flowing surface.
I think they would be really wonderful for a theatrical situation - you can just imagine a scene with dancers flitting in and out of the shadows. It could also work for an accent light in a dark restaurant, bar or club. For more normative settings, probably the shadow patterns are too active. If you wanted a simpler pattern, then you can turn the shadows off for all but one of the light sources.
If you want to have more subtle cast light patterns, you need to build real holes (with Boolean difference for solids Trim/Stitch for surfaces)and set Soft Shadows > Options for each light. Radiosity Rendering will help you get real bounced color from one surface to another as well.

Gorgeous...

I really appreciate the use of a black background to bring attention to the materials and lighting conditions. It is an elegant design but the materials are a bit "chunky". It is a nice juxtaposition.

Cheers,
